D. Leon:

I forgot to enclose the letter to Bill that I mentioned I sent. Leon I moved on the Columbian problem in split seconds after reading the article and seeing Bill's picture in the Chronicle yesterday. It appears to me from the pictures that Bill wasn't totally positive on the move. I haven't much detail on FARC and there position. I do know that the Columbia cartel regarding drugs is a prominent factor in the cocaine problem for American citizens. Since there is so much corruption in that country it's difficult to know what to do since you don't know who you can trust, which is par for the course. Now that Bill has gone to the cause, which is good. What to do now that he is there is questionable. I feel that with great enough attempt in the light it is possible to negotiate the situation out between Columbia government and FARC whatever the difference can be, just by getting to the cause of the problem. Until I have more details I can't comment on that. All I know is the ball is in there court. What they'll do with it remains to be seen. Regarding the drug problem, it is better left to Clinton's administration. The drug dealers particularly at the top in the cartel need to be convinced they have enough money and to get out of the business along with their top soldiers. On the other hand if a war breaks out many uniformed young people are going to bite the dust on both sides. Positive negotiations should be the first attempt. I can only pray for the people of Columbia that they can move into the light and out of their darkness to resolve the problems, that the leadership of the United States is able to help all the Americas in the outcome.
Sincerely Yours
Baba Ito
PS Please forward this letter to Bill, Al etc. Sometime you need to fight fire with fire but only as a last resort.
